Award-winning actress, Lupita Nyong’o has authored a book. And the book titled “Sulwe” is going to be a hit.
Although the 48-page book is meant for ages 4-8, it will no doubt pass through the fingers of a myriad of others beyond this age bracket. Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers the book titled “Sulwe” will be launched on 1st October.
“I wrote a book! It’s called #Sulwe! Sulwe is out October 1 and is available for pre-order today. The extraordinary Vashti Harrison Illustration illustrated the story. I wrote #Sulwe to encourage children (and everyone really!) to love the skin they are in & to see the beauty that radiates from within,” wrote Lupita on her Facebook page. She accompanied the post with a photo of her holding the book.
Sulwe is about a girl who has skin the colour of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family and in her school. However, all Sulwe wants is to be beautiful and bright, like her mother and sister. Then a magical journey in the night sky opens her eyes and changes everything.
Being writing the book, Lupita adds authorship to acting and film directing which she’s best known for. The daughter of Kisumu County governor received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as multiple accolades for her role in 12 years a slave.
Lupita has been an actor for many years. One of my favourites is her 2009 film, “The Roadside,” which was shot here in Kenya.
Lupita’s book, Sulwe, can be pre-ordered online by visiting this link. Sulwe means “star” in the Luo language.
