Kenya Universities Staff Union-KUSU officials are now demanding the immediate removal from office Vice Chancellor Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Prof.Fredrick Ochieng Otieno over embezzlement of funds and employment irregularities.
Addressing media in Nakuru on Thursday morning, the KUSU officials led by Dr. Charles Mukhwaya said they will do all within their powers to ensure the Vice Chancellor is out of office since the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission had completed the investigations over the same in a period of two years.
According to Dr.Mukhwaya, the said Vice chancellor has no reason to be in office after EACC found him culpable for abuse of office, corrupt deals misuse of public resources and intimidation of workers.
In a letter dated 10th November 2017, the EACC recommended the immediate suspension of the said Vice Chancellor .
“The EACC wrote on 10th of November to the University council that the Vice Chancellor must be suspended pending further investigations. We must state here that he must step aside as he has no legal mandate to continue presiding over a public institution” said Dr.Mukhwaya.
The KUSU secretary General added that the continued stay in office by the said Vice Chancellor was painting a bad image in the Universities Education system in the country.
While reiterating that the Union will not relent in ensuring integrity among University Chancellors, Dr.Mukhwaya also took the moment to warn other University Chancellors to ensure integrity or face the wrath.
“We as Workers representatives in these Universities have no other demands than to make sure that Prof.Otieno and the likes are out of office” he said.
The KUSU leaders commended the EACC for conducting their work in a very professional manner and called on the government to ensure that no rogue officials are operating within Universities.
On the next move if at all the said Vice Chancellor will not leave office, Dr.Mukhwaya stated that the Union will use all legal mechanisms to ensure Prof.Otieno is out of office.
If he drags his feet to leave the office, we as union will use all legal and Independent institutions to ensure he leave that office and this include our courts to ensure he is out of the office” he said.
Dr.Mukhwaya was addressing media in Nakuru accompanied by Ernest Wayaya who is the KUSU organizing Secretary as well as James Makori-the Treasurer.
