Kiunjuri: Government to spend Sh 80 billion on construction of small dams and water pans

The government through the ministry of Agriculture has set aside 80 billion shillings for construction of water Pans and small dams.

This is aimed at addressing the water shortage that has been leading to food insecurity.

Speaking during a tour in eight target counties over the weekend, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri said that the resolve came after the mega dams projects across the country were derailed due to politicizing the projects band corruption allegations.

Kiunjuri said that they are after constructing 4000 dams in the counties of Samburu, Baringo, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Nakuru, Laikipia, Isiolo and Machakos.

“The construction of small dams will reduce the cost and increase the irrigation activities in the drought prone areas to help address the food insecurity in the country” said Kiunjuri.

People living in Samburu, Isiolo and Baringo have applauded the project saying that the construction will now end annual wars that have been as a result of push and pull for water for their animals.

Nakuru County which has benefited with three dams in Subukia Sub County, the residents say they are hopeful to revive their tomato farming and feed the country.
