It was all joy as grand children and friends of Grace Muthoni visited her over the weekend during a thanksgiving ceremony to mark her 126 years.
Notwithstanding the distance from Nakuru county traversing all through Nyandarua, Laikipia to the village of Rabura in Kieni, Nyeri county, the group from Nakuru led by her granddaughter Veronica Mwangi and Nakuru Based gospel artist Jecintah Kibuku, theirs was to make sure they put a smile on the face of the elderly Muthoni.
The surprising fact is that unlike other elderly persons who do not take sugary foods, the granny adores them and even loves drinking soda especially the cocacola brand.
Addressing the media after the ceremony that saw all who visited enjoy a meal together besides cutting a Birthday cake, Grace Muthoni Nderitu – a granddaughter who shares a name with the grandmother and who also takes care of her called on the society not to neglect the elderly.
According to the granddaughter, the elderly Muthoni is said to have been married in 1914 during the First World War and was blessed with two daughters Anastasia Wangeci and Loice Wangui who passed on in 2005 and 2011 respectively.
It was after the death of her daughters that the elderly Muthoni moved in to live with her granddaughter Grace Muthoni.
According to Muthoni, taking the elderly to the care homes is lack of respect for them and it is high time the society embraced and showede love to the elderly rather than neglecting them.
“We have accepted her with a lot of passion. I think taking the elderly to the homes is just like dumping them there and the society should therefore embrace the elderly and take good care of them,” said Muthoni.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Veronica Wanjiru Mwangi who added that the elderly persons if shown love by family members can live longer. She added that since her parents passed on, they will continue as granddaughters to take care of their grandmother.
“Today we decided just to show love to our shosh; the elderly persons need love too,” said Veronica another granddaughter.
