Controversial contract yields shoddy work on Elementaita-Mau Narok road

Residents of Elementaita Ward in Gilgil are accusing Nyoro Contractors Ltd for what they term as shoddy work on the 50 KM Elementaita-Mau Narok road.

Speaking to the press in the area on Friday Morning, the residents said the work done on the road so far cannot be compared to the amount of money channeled towards the road that is pivotal to the much anticipated economic growth of the area.

The residents are now calling on the Nakuru Roads Engineer to compel Nyoro Contractors Ltd to adhere to agreed construction standards or chase away the contractor.

This even as Businesspersons Francis Njoroge and Halima Dair say the road which has been in utter disrepair for decades has led to years of an economic slump in Elementaita an area that is popular with bird watchers.

The road links hundreds of acres of commercial farm land in Mau Narok to markets in Nakuru and Naivasha towns. The traders say the prospects for better livelihoods in the area as envisaged by the Government`s development blue print are bleak if relevant authorities will not intervene and supervise the contractor.

“The ongoing heavy rains in the region have compounded the plight of residents as the poor drainage system on the road that is already declared complete causes floods that damage our business premises” said Njoroge.

According to area MCA Mosses Kamau,if the contractor is allowed to continue constructing the road with the scale of indifference, then the road will be a long term economic liability and an embarrassment to the development vision of the ruling Jubilee Party in the area.

When contacted, the contractor and the regional engineer did not respond.

The Kenya Rural Roads Authority has commissioned Nyoro contractors Limited to upgrade the road to bitumen status.

The contractor has only managed to gravel some 10 kilometers of the road.Construction works on the road commenced in December last year .

Relevant parties to the controversial contract have been reluctant to disclose the value of the contract and its turn over duration.
